Accommodation in the Private Sector

Looking for a more permanent place?

Private Rented Accommodation

  • Need enough money for a deposit.
  • Need references from previous Landlords/Employers/Bank.
  • Have to pay up front.

Different types of private rented accommodation

Bedsits: These are usually small units designed for one person.

Flats: This is where people live together in a house and share the facilities. You have two choices of flats: either shared where you live with another person or people; or a self contained unit where you stay by yourself.

Lodging: Have a resident landlord.

Once you have decided to rent a place go and check the property thoroughly to make sure it is secure. Check things such as heating/lighting/plumbing and see if they are all in working order. If you will be moving in with flat mates you don’t know check to see if you can meet the flat mates before deciding to move in.

Don’t hand over any cash without getting a receipt.

Before signing any lease agreement read it carefully and make sure you understand all of the wording. If you have any queries you can contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau, shelter or ask the Council for advice.
