Communities ScotlandCommunities Scotland

The Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 created a new Executive agency – Communities Scotland – to take on a wider strategic role. Their main purpose is to help provide good quality housing and contribute to the regeneration of local communities.

The agency funds the provision of new and improved homes by housing associations and private developers, carries out major research projects and through Homepoint has a significant role in supporting the provision of information and advice.

Communities Scotland’s remit centres around three main areas:

  • Regeneration – improving the physical fabric of neighbourhoods and enhancing the quality of life which people experience in their community.
  • Investment & Performance – helping disadvantaged urban and fragile rural communities in housing homeless people and upgrading houses in a state of disrepair or with low energy ratings.
  • Regulation & Inspection – overseeing the housing management, factoring and homelessness functions of all local authorities in Scotland, in addition to the social landlords who are currently registered with us.

Further details about the functions of Communities Scotland can be found at their website at www.communitiesscotland.gov.uk.
